Dear Irving:

Three years your senior, I look back over our misspent youth(s), our gradual coming of age as we dipped our toes and then totally immersed in poetry, and look what you have to show for it: a dozen splendid books and a coveted MacArthur. I could have written a limerick to celebrate your 80th if I'd had enough notice; instead I hail your birthday and send every good wish for several more.
